It’s easy to miss the early signs of water damage or mold in the home. Not only because we often don’t know what to look for, but also because it frequently appears in areas you don’t look at on a daily basis. Of course, if you see any of these signs, be sure to get them taken care of as soon as possible. Water damage can be costly and occasionally, irreparable.

What are the signs of water damage to look for?

  • Stains

If the stains are darker, they’re probably fresher. Lighter, chalkier stains are generally older.

  • Peeling/Bubbling

Wallpaper and edges have a way of alerting you to damage in your home!

  • Costly Water Bills

If you see a significant rise in your water bill, it might be a good idea to get a professional opinion.

  • Musty Odors

The odor will most likely smell like wet cardboard or newspaper, smelling strongest closest to the damage.

  • Mold

Mold can grow anywhere that water can pool, or surfaces can remain wet. It also can range in color from white to grey to blue to black.

  • Swollen Drywall

Water can seep into the drywall causing it to swell and expand.

  • Rusted Metal Fixtures

To get rid of the rust once the damage is taken care of, use white vinegar or lemon juice!

  • Loose Caulk around Pipes

You’ll have to fully remove old caulk before applying any new caulk to the area, or it won’t hold up for long!

What does water damage look like?

When it comes to ceilings and walls, you’ll likely notice peeling wallpaper and/or yellow or brown spots. For carpets and fabrics, typically darker spots will appear, although the damage can also have a lightening affect, not just for carpet but also wood. You may also notice warped or swollen areas on a wood floor.

How costly are Repairs?

Repairs for water damage can run anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars, so catching it early can save you a significant amount of money.
