Prepare BEFORE the storm hits
Understanding the risks of Colorado hail and windstorms is crucial, as we frequently see claims from these forces of nature. In fact, Colorado ranks among the top states for hail damage claims. Read on to find some ways to help mitigate the potential for major damage.
- Inspect Your Roof: Check shingles for cracks, curling, or weak spots. Roofing, siding, and window repairs have become more expensive in recent years, so making sure your coverage limits are up-to-date helps protect you from costly surprises. The age of your roof is also one of the major things carriers look at as they decide whether to take on the risk, so keeping it updated is imperative.
- Reinforce Windows & Skylights: Install storm shutters or keep plywood panels ready. Use window film to reduce shattering risk.
- Protect Your Vehicles: Park in a garage or under a carport. If that’s not possible, keep a thick blanket or specialized hail cover handy. And
- Trim Trees & Branches: Remove dead or weak branches that could fall and cause damage during a hailstorm.
- Secure Outdoor Items: Either store, or secure patio furniture, grills, lawn chairs, pool toys, outdoor umbrellas, etc.
- Check Gutters & Downspouts: They should be cleaned and firmly attached so they can handle hail and runoff from heavy rains.
- Update Insurance Coverage: Call us to go over your homeowner’s and auto policies to confirm you're adequately covered, and review your deductibles.
- Create an Emergency Kit: This should include flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, bottles or jugs of water, and non-perishable food items. It's easy to overlook, but I recommend making a quick list of things specific to your needs, such as a can opener, hand and feet warmers, even packing an extra blanket couldn't hurt! Don't forget to bring a radio, so you know when storms are approaching, and can stay updated on the progress.
- Make a Plan for Location: Choose an interior room away from windows, where your family (and pets) can take shelter in the event of a hailstorm, and stay inside!
Don't forget to use caution when driving in high winds; it's important to watch out for drivers that may not be paying as much attention as you!
We never think it will happen to us, but consider the following real-life scenarios:
Jenna had just finished running errands when a summer hailstorm rolled through. By the time the skies cleared, her car windshield was spider-webbed with cracks from golf ball–sized hailstones. It was unexpected and stressful, but because she had comprehensive coverage, the replacement was able to be handled quickly.
Judd had brushed off the thought of roof maintenance, since he didn't think a few loose shingles would make such a difference. Then came a powerful hailstorm that left dents, cracks, and leaks throughout his roof. When he filed a claim, the damage was so extensive that the insurance company approved a full roof replacement, which, after deductible, saved him over $15,000!
When Sarah returned home from work one evening, she noticed strange pockmarks along the side of her house. She had an insurance adjuster come look, who confirmed that a recent hailstorm had caused the damage, and since she was covered, was able to get it repaired quickly.
Kevin thought he was prepared for Colorado’s unpredictable storms, but a heavy hailstorm ended up clogging his gutters. This led to overflowing water, which began pooling around the foundation, eventually seeping into his basement. Without proper coverage, he ended up having to pay out-of-pocket, in order to avoid long-term mold issues.
Jasmine, unfortunately, saw a hail storm total her brand new (to her) SUV that she'd had her eye on for months. In less than 20 minutes, massive hailstones had dented the hood and roof so badly that it was deemed a total loss.
These days, policies carry special deductibles for wind and hail damage that are higher than your standard deductible. It’s important to know what you’ll actually owe if you file a claim. Please give us a call at 720.335.6872 so we can take a look at your policies together. Since we do a review at every renewal, looking at what's covered, we'll send you our recommendations so you're at least familiar with your policy.
